Members from the LexisClick team recently attended a Social Media event at Bournemouth University and the following example from Coke and Pepsi’s continuing ‘war’ was brought to light to showcase the powerful reach of social media.
The Coke / Pepsi soda wars have been long in existence and their latest saga went viral; shared by thousands of people on Facebook and Twitter. On Halloween, Pepsi dressed up as Coca Cola by donning a red cape with Coca Cola written on it, with the caption ‘We wish you a scary Halloween.’
Somebody creative (not directly associated with Coke) imagined how Coke would respond and used the same ad but edited the tagline to read ‘Everybody Wants To Be A Hero’ – evidently referring to the iconic red cape that Superman wears.
The proof’s in the pudding... In just a few hours, this retort reached over 300,000 people on Facebook, not to mention thousands of re-tweets and Google+ posts. We can’t help but wonder how much it would cost to reach this many people if this was a paid for advertisement?
